Yesterday evening Premsela’s Masters of Amateurism event, featuring Katja Hentschel of Glamcanyon, took place in Meneer de Wit. As miss Hentschel is also featured in the book ‘Fashion Blogs’, we were invited to join the party, which included a special presentation on the topic of fashion blogging in relation to amateurism.

Aynouk Tan, fashion journalist and one of the book’s chapter introduction writers, opened the discussion with a short review of ‘Fashion Blogs’, calling it “a timeless document that puts fashion blogging as a field on the map”. As she did in her article, she pointed out that the phenomenon of scenesters has always existed, but that it was never as visible as it is now, due to the internet. Because of this new phenomenon of fashion blogging, kids are now taken much more seriously by the fashion world, and bloggers can no longer be ignored by the fashion elite. She said: “They’re all different and unique persons, they write from their own unique perspective on fashion”, and even had a small piece of advice for all the fashion bloggers out there: “Just be yourself, and fame and fortune will happen for you. It sounds very Oprah, but it’s true.”

Next, Maurice Seleky, online media and communications specialist, took the floor and noted that a good relationship with bloggers is crucial for PR Companies now, calling fashion bloggers a ‘new type of influentials’ who in turn take advantage of this relationship by asking PR Companies for invitations to fashion shows. In other words, Seleky said, “Blogging now is a lifestyle with the appeal of professional soccer.”

Next, the lovely Katja Hentschel was up, and the attending audience members, including founder of 360Fashion Anina, were able to ask questions. Starting off with a short bio, Katja explained how she started her blog Glamcanyon three and a half years ago, just for fun. A small phenomenon at the time, blogging has become huge in Germany since, she noted, turning into a hype. She named the German Les Mads as a good example of a massively popular blog that also managed to improve in quality over time. While there is still a stigma in the heads of PR and fashion industry people, bloggers often aren’t the amateurs they are seen as, she explained, and indeed “online is the future.” Katja answered our questions about monetising your blog and about where to draw the line between being authentic and selling out (in terms of bloggers partnering up with major brands and sponsors). “It’s up to yourself, ” she replied, and pointed how “working with brands and magazines actually gives you the freedom to do the other things you love doing.” In her specific case, it is her love for travelling, which she is exploring in her new project, www.travelettes.net/. After all, Katja admitted, “I’m not sure I want to be a photographer for the rest of my life.”

Glamcanyon in Amsterdam

This year Premsela, dutch platform for design and fashion ,organises a series of presentations on the common ground in amateurism, popular culture and design, in collaboration with the American Book Center. Titled 'Masters of Amateurism' Premsela invites international authors and designers to talk about their work from a specific perspective on amateurism, like DIY, hacking, web 2.0, bricolage and street fashion.

Guest on July 18th is Katja Hentschel, fashion blogger and photographer, she and her blog Glamcanyon were featured in 'Fashion Blogs', so we're excited to have her coming to Amsterdam. The presentation is part of Premsela's fashion week program and entrance is free so if you're in town make sure you stop by.

Fashion blogs are crucial sources of news and inspiration for everyone who wants to stay up-to-date on fashion.
The phenomenon of fashion blogging raises many questions, Journalist Kirstin Hanssen and graphic designer Felicia Nitzsche investigated these questions, together with co-writer Elina Tozzi and decided to capture fashion blogs as an intriguing piece of zeitgeist in a book. The main content of the book is divided into five categories: fashion journalism, street style photography, party photography, personal style blogs, and men’s style.

Today approx. 1.7 billion people use the Internet. Online revolu- tion is celebrating its triumph and the increasing number of blogs and communities is part of this. After spending a fortune on printed media throughout the last decade, journalist Kirstin Hanssen and graphic designer Felicia Nitzsche developed a new addiction in these past few years: fashion blogs.
Both fascinated by this growing phenomenon, constantly fol- lowing a wide variety of fashion blogs, they decided to capture this intriguing piece of Zeitgeist in a book, with support and contribu- tions by co-writer Elina Tozzi.

They wondered: who are these new opinion leaders? What moves fashion bloggers to spend so much time on running a web log? Who or what are their news resources? Can we speak of them as profes- sional amateurs? Do they earn a living with blogging? What is the scope of their number of visitors? Has blogging changed their life? How do they deal with negative comments? How do they view the future of printed media?

The book contains around 40 interviews with both fashion blog- ging pioneers and upcoming talent; divided into five different cat- egories, from fashion journalism to street style. In addition, ‘Fashion Blogs’ offers an extensive index with over 600 URLs of the most interesting, beautiful, hilarious, informative, and original fashion blogs. Furthermore, five industry insiders were asked to write an introduction to one of the categories, and also to provide their per- sonal opinion on fashion blogs in general.

Blogs that are featured in the book, by means of an interview supported by photos, are: Style Bubble, Garance Doré, A Shaded View On Fashion, Glamcanyon, Stil in Berlin, July Stars, Abdul Lagerfield, Street Etiquette, Les Mads, The Streethearts, Pretend It Never Happened, Moderniteter, Kate Loves Me, The Dandy Project, Sea of Shoes, Pandora, Elinkan, and many more.
Every era has its start. In ‘Fashion Blogs’ you will find the result of what is currently happening in the fashion blog world, meaning: a couple of years after the kick-off, but only a few hits before the big bang.
